“The city wasn’t attacked, Oliver.”
“What?”
“Look out at the guardhouses on each point. Neither one is damaged. How could an attack have come from the sea without damaging those? And where are the attacking ships and soldiers?”
“Not sure, I guess. There are clear signs of fighting, though, and no signs of meteors. Someone was here.”
Ponce grabbed a burlap sack that had lost nearly all its grain on the ground and held it up. “But who attacks and takes no spoils and causes no casualties? You think the city could have staged it?” That sounded stupid the second it came out of his mouth. “Let’s follow the trail.”
The damage path turned southeast from the pier and up the defensive hill but didn’t break through the outer wall, so they had to go back up through the city gate to follow it.
...
The market square shared the eastern part of its district with a chapel. The chapel had a huge grassy courtyard in front of it, and in the center of that courtyard stood a lone tree that was always burning. Ponce had never had the chance to get close to the tree or the chapel; both were supposedly bewitched and were heavily patrolled at all times. It sat on the head of his curiosity like a crown. The trail passed through the south edge of the market and ended at this tree. The crackling fire seemed to drown out a nearby guard's angry murmurs.
“Look at that, Oliver . . . the trail stops in front of the only thing in town more mysterious than the trail itself.”
The city of Arkis stands on the precipice of rebirth and destruction along with all of Lencia. Its greatest hope for survival is Ponce, a city architect, inventor, and unfettered young man whose soul is in constant search of greater possibilities. He has spent his entire life trying to figure out what’s really going on in the world, and when the is city mysteriously attacked and the path leads directly to the mysterious tree burning perpetually at its center, Ponce is pushed to the limit—and he escapes.
Ponce is thrust into the center of an ancient wager between the same cosmic leaders—Sotare and Perfidious, good versus evil—who hold Lencia’s future in their hands. Through redemption and love, Sotare uses Ponce to try and heal a broken world while Perfidious uses him to destroy it. The love of a woman sent to tempt Ponce will determine the victor and restore—or destroy—Everburn.
More C.S. Lewis than J.R.R. Tolkien, Bunch’s debut is a sweeping epic that strips bare the dangers of conformity and reminds us all that great things can be accomplished with nothing more than devoted friends and unflagging perseverance. His multi-layered allegory has a mythological complexity rarely seen in the fantasy genre, looking far beyond the physical world to expose universal, underlying truths as razor sharp dialogue and well-developed characters drive this rich, detailed world toward its ultimate date with destiny. A riveting journey full of danger, intrigue, and almost unbearable tension, Everburn signals the arrival of an important new voice in the world of fantasy.

As a free book of the day quite a while back, the description and cover of this book intrigued me months before I ever began reading. I can't say I read much fiction at all, but I resolved to read this book and end my speculation.Everburn is an incredible fantasy novel that does a great job of laying out the classic story of good versus evil without being cliche at all. For a fantasy novel, it sure leaves you wondering, "What is going on?!", more so than not throughout the story and for me that's not a bad thing. Since this is the first novel in the "Ever" series, clouding much of the lore and revealing it only as needed only built up suspense and had a sense of reward to it as you learned. I would say this novel presents a great amount of mystery, and even much more than halfway through the book this stays since revealing the backstory only leaves more questions at times. In this sense, Everburn may not be for people who don't like an underlying element of mystery, but it's hard to pass this fantasy novel up with the adventure it takes you on.
As far as fantasy goes, Robert Bunch creates new creatures rather than reusing some age old ones that fill fantasy novels of the day. The medieval atmosphere and world that is layed out before you is incredible, and the main character Ponce is very easy to like and empathize with. With out giving much of the plot away, since nearly any part may confuse someone who may read Everburn, just know that it has its many twists, turns, and memorable characters. Also, the sophisticated writing style of Robert Bunch and the third-person perspective suits the multiple views and characters that you meet within the story well.
I highly recommend reading Everburn if you even remotely like fantasy, or just like good books!

Everburn edition by Robert Bunch Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Bunch's new book presents us with an exciting universe where more is happening than we realize. An epic struggle of good versus evil comes alive through the curiosity and courage of the main character, Ponce. As he develops new relationships and old ones change, the reader is captivated by what will be revealed next. The story unfolds through the lives of these rich, multi-dimensional, and complex characters to lead us to encounter the unexplained mysteries of Arkis and its surrounding cities. The mythology is well-developed and suspense carries the reader all the way to the climactic and intense ending. This is a well-written, provocative, and engaging book which fans of any kind of fiction will enjoy. For those who like Harry Potter Paperback Box Set (Books 1-7),J.R.R. Tolkien Boxed Set (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings),Lost The Complete Collection [Blu-ray], or the The Chronicles of Narnia 7 Book Box Set, they will especially be satisfied by Everburn.
This book kept me some what interested, but I gradually got sick of the writing style and the jumping around. There we several words left out or out of order. If the author would have simply had a friend read it, many of those mistakes could have been remedied and I would have had a better first impression. He also used terms, abbreviations, and character names like I should know them. Kind of annoyed me, even if it was gradually explained later. I finally had enough and quit reading about 45% through the book.
Saw the cover again about 6 months later and something prompted me to give it another shot. Glad I did! The writing style either grew on me or got better. The story really took off too. It ended up being a pretty good book. It could possibly help someone understand why things happen that just don't make sense or seem unfair. God is always in control, even if we don't understand His plan.
I like a good fantasy fiction that falls into the religious/Christian fiction category, but doesn't become a see-through allegorical tale. There is clearly the good versus evil, and adventure, and even some romance thrown in--tastefully. Robert Bunch has concocted a fascinating tale, and I enjoyed reading it. I happened across this book as a "freebie" one day, but this 500+ page novel is well worth the $4.99 kindle price, and I would probably even have bought it in print if I'd not already seen it on kindle.
Since I'm commenting on the kindle format, I will add that I did not note any significant format/grammer issues that often creep up and distract the reader in many of the kindle books. (It's been a month or so since I read it, but as I think back, I cannot recall their being any issues that were significant enough to disrupt my reading, if any.)
